I genuinely worry that transformative fans have for so long told themselves the story that fanfic is “subversive” and that fanfic is “talking back/giving the finger to the man/the system/capitalism” that they have failed to see how their use of fanfiction might be enabling the man/the system/capitalism to keep screwing up and screwing them over…over and over and over again. That’s not you “FIXING” anything, that’s you SYSTEMICALLY ENABLING THE CONTINUATION OF INSTITUTIONAL BULLSHIT. And it is an important mode of acquiring satisfaction from mainstream media when mainstream media (understandably) cannot please everyone all of the time in every way possible.īut there is a huge, massive, monumental, epic, gargantuan difference between “I want to see these two characters who come from a gritty 1930s noir interact in a modern coffee shop, or in medieval Europe” or even “I like one pairing in this love triangle, and the story decided to do the other pairing as endgame” and what people seem to be suggesting is also in the purview of fanfiction, i.e., “Media makers should be given an infinite pass to shit out any old nonsense that might occur to them, and we should all be fine with that, because of we can just fix it in fanfic.” Of hearing people say, “Well if you don’t like what Game of Thrones did, just fanfic about it.”įanfiction is an immensely valuable cultural practice.
